MEB Moves FAQ

What can I start doing now to prepare?

Begin assessing your current inventory of equipment and contents. Consider whether everything needs to be relocated and identify any outdated or unused equipment that should be sent to Surplus.

When will the move actually take place?

The move is being planned for January 2027, ahead of the start of the spring 2027 semester.

Will I need to pack my desk and/or my lab?

Yes. You are responsible for packing all contents in your current space that need to be relocated. Prior to the move, moving boxes and a move planning guide will be provided to assist with packing and labeling.

Do the movers move everything?

No. Movers will not relocate personal items, including framed photos, artwork, mini fridges, and similar belongings. Personal items are defined as anything not owned by the University.

Please note that personal items are not covered by insurance if damaged during transport. These items should be taken home prior to the move and brought to your new office separately.

Can I take my chair?

New task chairs will be provided at all workstations and offices in the new Medical Education Building (MEB). Existing task chairs will not be moved unless there is a documented accommodation on file with Human Resources and/or an ergonomic assessment that resulted in a special chair purchase.

If you require your current task chair to be relocated, please email moves@ucmerced.edu. Requests must be received no later than March 1 to be accommodated.

I have a monitor I no longer need. What should I do?

Any office supplies and/or equipment that are no longer needed must follow the Surplus Property Process. For more information, please review the Surplus Property website or contact surplus@ucmerced.edu.

Do I pack my trash can?

You may pack your trash can if you wish; however, trash service in the new MEB will be centralized. There will be no individual desk-side trash pickup.

Recycle, trash, and compost bins will be located in designated areas throughout the building. If you choose to bring your trash can, please label it and note that you will be responsible for emptying it at one of these locations.

I have a mini fridge. Will it be moved for me?

No. Mini fridges and microwaves will not be relocated. Workstations, offices, and labs are not designed to support the additional electrical load required for these appliances.

The building includes three break rooms—one on each floor—each equipped with a refrigerator and microwave.

When can I anticipate boxes to begin packing?

Boxes will be provided at the start of the fall semester. If you will be on sabbatical and need to pack your office and/or lab earlier, please notify moves@ucmerced.edu.

How many boxes will I get?

Each staff and faculty member will be provided a bundle of 10 boxes. During the pre-move planning walk in February, should volume of content require additional boxes, they will be provided.

Will you provide boxes for trash and/ or transport of contents home?

No, boxes provided will be for move purposes only. Should you need recycling containers to clear out old papers, please submit a ticket to FM Help for recycling.

Do I pack my phone?

Yes. If you have a desktop phone, place it in a box and/or attach a move label. Phones will be relocated by the movers.

How do I pack my keyboard tray?

Keyboard trays will not be moved. All new staff desks are sit-to-stand desks that allow for ergonomic adjustment without the need for a keyboard tray.

My monitors are mounted to my desk. How do I pack them?

Simply place your move label on the monitor(s). Monitor arms will be removed and transported by the movers.

What happens to department-purchased furniture? Can I move it?

Department-purchased workstations, chairs, file cabinets, and bookcases will remain in place, as all new furniture has been provided for the MEB. Additional information on this policy is available here.
